7 Habits of Successful Copywriter

I have read the translation of the article «7 daily habits of a successful copywriter», written by Katie Yeakle. These secrets of success and also my comments go along. The article came out very easy –to-read, somehow a biographical one.

The most difficult thing for freelance copywriters is to work from home. Because they are constantly tempted to do anything but work. The best way here is to choose a place for work outside the home. For me, the best is to take laptop somewhere in the park in a good weather and work. If, however, you work at home, it must be either private office or a place that would become «mental anchor» for productivity attitude. Also, you must disable all communicators: mail, phone, ICQ, Skype, etc.

2. Make a schedule and stick to it..!

Most copywriting guru are early birds. They get up early and work while no one distracts. On springs and summers, I also used to get up at 5 am. To work in this time is great. But now I cannot get up that early, I come up to the window, look outside – it is dark. My first thought is: ” It is early to get up, will sleep a little more”.

Everyone should choose for him/her the time when it is more comfortable to work. Also do not forget about time management and at least make a plan for tomorrow.

3. Read every day.

On my opinion, this advice is useful for everybody, not just for copywriters. I love to read, apparently it is an influence or result of philological education. During a semester I had to read at least 10 works of Russian, Ukrainian and foreign literature. Now I indeed read every day. At least two books a month.

I pay attention on advertisement (it is more like a reflex).

4. Write every day.

Indeed, it does not matter what you write. It can be a paid article or a letter to a friend, what is more important here is to write.

5. Get ready to write … before you actually write.

Gathering information is relevant not only in journalism, copywriting, but also in many other areas. For advertising texts it is needed at least to see the data of the product, examine advertising texts written before, ask the target audience about the product or service. And remember, a lot of information does not happen in this case. It is easier to write text with an excess of data than with the apparent sufficiency.

6. Explore everything.

You should have the spirit of a researcher deep down in your heart! Now I am observing the one in my 7-year-old son. Copywriters also need this curiosity. Great articles are coming out, when you start to dig deeper. Associations appear, the trends are used and so on.

7. Get rid of «writer’s mental block».

Some say that it does not exist, that this concept was invented. I personally experienced a state when I could write absolutely nothing. There is indeed a piece of truth in my comic article «Create text within 7 days».

People are struggling with this problem by all means. Someone begins just to type a text, such as: «I have a sheet of paper in front of me. I must write a text about the 13th international architectural biennale in Venice, which is being held right at the moment, as I am typing these words…», this method helps me. I also have rich imagination, I love to draw parallels and associations, thus to read a text of a similar topic really helps.
